Managing Academic Pressures: University Students in Jordan
Without quoting the increasing number of research papers and studies conducted on this topic, mental health still has a major impact on the academic life of dental students in Jordan in the year 2025. Finding a balance between academic life and a good mental state can seem nearly impossible to most, with an increasing number of students falling into a slump of hopelessness and essentially depression. Indeed, a perfect balance cannot exist however, with preparation and effort you can get to a balance that is close enough to get through the year happily, with motivation and confidence for the next. To understand what it’s really like juggling studies here, you might enjoy reading [Life as a Dental Student in Jordan 2025: What I Wish I Knew Before Starting].
A Bad Score is Not the End of the World
You are not just your grades, meaning whether you get a 4/4 or 0/4 will not automatically make you less valuable. When you get a bad score in a test just know that everything god puts in your life happens for a reason that is beyond our capacity of understanding. Also, I saw this somewhere and it changed the way I think: “In a few years you will look back at your life and realize that it’s a comedy show”. Not saying you should be careless without thinking of the consequences but don’t take these things so seriously, they will not stay with you in the grave. Focus more on being a good person and the rest will sort itself out in sha Allah [growth matters more than perfection]. That’s why I’m confident when I say, you are so much more than just your grades!
What a Balance between Academic life and Mental health looks like
Listen, we all know what it feels like but can we put it into words? When you feel like you’re on top of the world, you begin to see hope of succeeding. You go to sleep feeling proud of yourself and thankful to god. You’re excited for a new day to start so you can do even better. The confidence and motivation skyrocket and you feel like you’re back to being the best version of yourself. Staying motivated is never easy, but it’s important to look for ways that work for you and make you personally more invested into whatever you’re doing [Why a study partner is what you need to stay motivated].
When you know your balance is disrupted
Slowly your energy gets drained, leaving you tired and sad, at some point even emotionless. That pressure of maintaining the “perfect balance” disrupts your mental health, leaving you anxious and exhausted. With so many things to do and so little energy it happens….. you enter the slump of carelessness. You feel overwhelmed by so many tasks that you end up doing nothing, sounds familiar? Essentially this creates self-loathing in your subconscious. This feeling of guilt and self-deprecation makes you feel like you’re a good-for-nothing human being. Finding peace in small moments, especially during stressful seasons can improve your life and help you find that balance [Embracing silence and boredom to improve your life]. Listen, I know it’s difficult, but I’m confident that at least one of these things will help you get out of that slump. Don’t worry if no one understands, I got you!
Let’s dive in, shall we?
Here are some digital and printable planners/trackers like this (I use too), that will help you get your life in order, YOU GOT THIS!
Mental Health Comes Before Academic Life
Yes, your mental state is the most important thing, because with a healthy state of mind you should feel like you can do anything! You should not feel like every time you open the material you want to throw it across the room. You should forgive yourself for not acing the exam because you’re so much more than that. When you have a healthy state of mind you have confidence, self-love, higher performance quality, and a belief in god and yourself that provides you with immense strength and Perseverance. For those who find comfort in faith and intention, you might like reading [Dream Bold, Act with Niyyah: Your Breakthrough Starts from Within]. Therefore, you should focus on bettering your mental state before anything else.
How Do I Better My Mental State?
Now the question comes, how do I better my Mental health? Well, that is completely up to you. As we know, no two brains are identical, making us both unique and difficult to assess. What makes YOU happy? The first thing that popped into your mind is probably it. Maybe it’s drinking green tea and sitting by the window while watching a movie on your iPad. Maybe a refreshing shower leaves you feeling alive again.
It’s always the little things that we discard during exams that make us feel in control of our lives. When you feel overwhelmed, you’ve lost control of everything so your brain lets it all go to cope. Even if you don’t think you have a routine everyone does, and it’s stored in our subconscious. If you want to redesign your environment for better focus and peace, I’ve written about that in [Unlock Your Brain Power: How to Optimize Study Habits and Environment].
(1) Get back to doing the things you would usually do. That’s why it’s so important to have a routine and write it down. Even if it’s simple. Like having breakfast, saying the morning supplication, studying, praying, and sleeping-start small! (2) Don’t compare yourself to anyone who has their life together, they don’t, but that’s what they show you. Instead (3) compare yourself to yourself yesterday.
Start applying these tips and you’ll see a great balance of academic life and mental health very soon in sha Allah. You got this!

universities by World Health Organization (WHO) if you’re interested in reading it.
Don’t Be so Hard on Yourself
How would you talk to a child crying in the park or your friends with exam stress? Exactly, so why do you not talk to yourself that way? It’s okay to take that energy and put it into yourself for a change. Ask your closest relatives/friends for help. Comfort yourself and be okay with yourself failing sometimes. You tried your best, what happens is already written so don’t stress too much about it. Find solace in God’s compassion, He’s always watching over you! 🙂
